What's in a Name?

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

A name is everything...especially if you lived in Biblical times.  There are too many examples of how names fit the men and women in the Bible. The meaning of...

Abraham   Father of Many
Adam        Man {Since he was the first it seems fitting}
Esther       Star {And was she not the star of the show?}
Job            Persecuted
Satan        Adversary

Habakkuk is no exception.  His name actually has two meanings, "wrestle" and "embrace".  Wrestle and embrace...that is exactly what Habakkuk does in his book.

He wrestles with God...

How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

But in the end, he embraces.  Embraces and holds on tight.  Not to pat answers.  Not to full explanations of what God is doing.  He embraces God...

I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord.
You came out to deliver your people.
I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength.

May we be like Habakkuk.  Though we struggle and wrestle with what God brings in our lives. Though we can't understand His ways.  May we in the end embrace that He loves us and is always out for our good.

More on Habakkuk.
