Shakespeare's Histories

Friday, June 25, 2010

Here are the characteristics of Shakespeare's histories.  What is interesting about these categories is that some of Shakespeare's tragedies have historical components like Julius Caesar and Macbeth.  But the histories are different in that...

They are set in Medieval English history.

They aren't historically accurate.  Whereas Julius Caesar is!

They provide social commentary about Shakespeare's time rather than that of Medieval history.

The 10 plays classified as history are as follows:

1.Henry IV, Part I
2.Henry IV, Part II
3.Henry V
4.Henry VI, Part I
5.Henry VI, Part II
6.Henry VI, Part III
7.Henry VIII
8.King John
9.Richard II
10.Richard III
