This year I am combining Booking It 2012 with a Classics Reading Challenge. Booking It is more of an online book club where we share what we have read each month whereas the Back to the Classics Challenge has specific guidelines.
For my first classic I decided to read The Scarlet Pimpernel. It seems like I have recently read a lot of books that have to do with the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. The Scarlet Pimpernel is no exception. I really need to brush up on my knowledge of the French Revolution to get more out of these novels, but for the time being I am just enjoying the stories.
I have to say that I really enjoyed this novel! It is part love story, part mystery, and part adventure tale. The hero, the Scarlet Pimpernel, bravely confronts the Reign of Terror by rescuing aristocrats from the guillotine. His mysterious identity shocks those around him when his true self is revealed. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a true disguised super hero (similar to Superman)! The characters are well developed and memorable. While some of the plot is predictable, the story line held my interest. If you are looking for intrigue, romance, and adventure this novel would be a great pick!
Just popping over to say hello from Booking It. :-) I was happy to see that you reviewed one of my favorite books, "The Scarlet Pimpernel". I read it for the first time when I was 13, and I've read it probably 3 or 4 times since then. I love it just as much as a re-read as I did when I was reading it for the first time. Great plot, great characters, and a wonderful ending! :-)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Carrie!
ReplyDeleteI hopped over from Booking It and I don't think I've ever read The Scarlet Pimpernel! I'll have to add it to my to-read list :)
ReplyDeleteI've never really known what this book was about, so I've never considered it before. Thanks for the review - I am also interested in reading about the Reign of Terror/French Revolution, so I should give this one a go!
ReplyDeleteI'm adding the title to my list. I've never read it and love anything with France :)
