We have enjoyed using IEW's (Institute for Excellence in Writing) poetry memorization program. We are about to complete level one. For next year we will continue onto level two, but I feel like we also need to be memorizing more scripture. Here is our plan for the next school year, which will be linked in my sidebar:
For poetry memorization in level two, we will do poems like...
Fog by Carl Sandburg
Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll
Trees by Joyce Kilmer
The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson
This isn't a complete list, but it gives you and idea of what we will be working on.
For Bible verse memorization, I wanted to do some passages as opposed to skipping all around the Bible to lots of different little verses. Here are the passages we are going to attempt....
Psalms 1
Psalms 23
Psalms 8
Isaiah 43:1-3
Isaiah 46:3-9
Jeremiah 17:5-8
Matthew 5:3-11
I will come up with more if we accomplish these, but I thought I wouldn't overwhelm myself with too much!
I think you all will really enjoy learning the longer passages of scripture. I almost think it has more of an impact that way. I pray my kids will remember some of these verses for the rest of their lives. I know you feel the same way. You'll have to update us as you start memorizing and let us know how it's going!!
