Bible in 90 Days-Isaiah and Jeremiah

This past week I spent all my time in Isaiah and in Jeremiah.  While there are so many wonderful, encouraging verses in both these books, I have to admit that I really struggling understanding all the prophecies contained in these books. It is probably due to the fact that I am not familiar with all the history.

But there are gems that I did glean. One of the main concepts that I got out of Isaiah was that the Israelites were being punished for their sins and having to face enemies as a consequence.  Yet, God offers them encouragement even through their suffering for their sins.  Here are a few.

All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. {Isaiah 41:11-13}

I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.  {Isaiah 44:22}

Weekly Wrap-Up: In Which we get Dumped on

This has been a crazy week of snow!  We had about 18 inches fall on Monday, and we are currently getting more snow as I type!  Monday morning school was delayed a bit just so we could dig ourselves out!  You know it is bad when you have to dig a path for your mini schnauzer so that he can "do his duty" outside! LOL

We are plugging along in school.  We have about 6 more weeks of our history curriculum and under 10 weeks for some of the other subjects. It is cool to see that we are reaching the end in some areas.

This week Zach read Edgar Allen Poe for the first time, The Cask of Amontillado.  He thought it was pretty creepy!  I told him that as far as I know all his writings are like that.  Zach is now working on writing a critique for it.

We received some of our new curriculum for next year this week!!!!  I am sure that I am the only one that is excited about it!

Always a Place for Grace

Sometimes you get more than you bargained for...

Like choosing {Grace} as your Word of the Year and being given way too many opportunities to extend it.

Giving grace can be painful...excruciating.  But maybe that is where grace always is....in the place of pain...

He didn't want to follow through.  He would have begged to be able to walk away from it all.  He did beg. Yet, He knew what He had to do...take the insults, the false accusations, the lies, the disrespect, the injustices and absorb them all. That wasn't all...there was physical agony, too.  Why? Because He deserved it?  Hardly.

How did He respond? GRACE. {Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.}  He would forgive them...He would beg His Father to forgive them all on the basis that they didn't have a clue.  But maybe that was the point.  They would never know the depths of the pain  their own sin had caused...He would shield them from it.  He would pay the price. They would never truly know.

I will follow His example. Does my enemy understand the depth of pain she has caused? No. Will she ever get it? Probably not. Is it important that she does? No. The only thing that matters that there is Grace in the Place of pain.

 {Father, forgive her, for she doesn't know what she is doing.}

Alaskan Bible Verses

I recently came across these verses while trying to read through the Bible in 90 days.  Reading them makes me think of this great state that I live in...

He spreads the snow like wool
and scatters the frost like ashes.
He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who can withstand his icy blast?
He sends his word and melts them;
he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.  {Psalms 147:16-18}

Smack Dab in the Middle

This week I hit the mid-point in reading through the Bible in 90 days.  I love moving through Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes.  I just love this week...easy reading as you go through the psalms (which are essentially poetry) and the proverbs.  Here are some verses that struck me as I read...

He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name. {Psalms 147:4}

A generous man will prosper;
he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. {Proverbs 11:25}

The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good. {Ecclesiastes 9:17-18}

Waffles

We love waffles here!  It is sad to say though that we rarely eat them because it is such a production for me to make them.  When I do though we are in heaven! The recipe I use makes a ton of them. I save some for the next morning's breakfast and then freeze the rest. This week I made two batches of waffles.  We are stocked for awhile.

 Basic Waffles
6 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
3 T. baking powder
1 1/2 t. baking soda
1 1/2 t. salt
5 1/4 cups milk
1 cup oil
6 large eggs
Place ingredients in a mixing bowl and combine until smooth. Let batter rest for 5 minutes. Cook on a waffle iron. Yum!

Freezer Cooking for February

We are sharing our favorite foods at Life as Mom this week.  I think one of my favorites (although there are many) that I don't eat very often is Eggplant Parmesan (Parmigiana).  The recipe below is the best! It is even low in fat because you bake the eggplant instead of frying it.

I am also listing some of the meals that I will be bulking cooking with a friend so that we have enough meals in the freezer.  Let's start with the eggplant and move on from there.

Eggplant Parmesan
1 medium eggplant, cut into slices
1-2 eggs beaten
2 cups bread crumbs
1 T olive oil
3 cloves garlic
1 medium onion, sliced
1  28oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 t. basil
1/2 t. oregano
1/2 t. salt
pepper
1 t. sugar
15 oz. ricotta cheese
1/4 cup Parmesan
4 oz. mozzarella, shredded
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Coat cookie sheet with cooking spray. Dip eggplant into eggs then bread crumbs to coat. Place on cookinng sheet and drizzle with olive oil.  Wrap garlic and onion in foil. Place on cookie sheet. Bake eggplant, onion, and garlic for 40 minutes turning the eggplant once. Add tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, pepper and sugar to a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Squeeze garlic paste from skin into the tomato mixture; add the onion.  Lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Spread 3/4 cup of the sauce over the bottom of a 8 x 6 x 2 inch casserole. Place a layer of eggplant on the bottom Top with half of the remaining sauce. Combine the ricotta and Parmesan and spread over the sauce. Add another layer of eggplant. Cover with remaining sauce. Sprinkle with mozzarella. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes.

Gruyere Chicken En Croute
{These are VERY yummy! Well worth the effort}
1 package (6 oz) fresh baby spinach
1 medium onion
1 t. butter
1/2 t. salt
pepper to taste
1 garlic clove, pressed
1 jar (12 oz.) roasted red peppers, drained and patted dry
1 1/2 cups grated Guyere cheese
2 1/2 cups diced roasted chicken
24 sheets thawed phyllo dough
Nonstick cooking spray
Slice onion.  Melt butter in saucepan and then add onion, salt, pepper, and garlic. Cook and stir for 2-3 minutes over med-high heat. Add spinach and cook for 3 minutes more until wilted. Drain spinach mixture and squeeze dry using paper towels. Set aside. Dice roasted peppers. Grate the cheese. Combine the roasted peppers, 1 cup of the cheese and the chicken in a bowll.  Stir together and set aside. Unfold one sheet of phyllo.. Lightly spray with cooking spray. Take a little bit of the remaining cheese and sprinkle over the dough. Repeat two more time to create a stack of three phyllo sheets, ending with cheese. Place 1 T. of the spinach mixture onto the phyllo 2 inches from the short end. Place 1/2 cup of chicken over the spinach. Fold sides of phyllo in toward the center. Gently roll up.  Makes 8 bundles.  At this point you can freeze them. To serve: Spray each bundle with cooking spray and bake 30 minutes or until golden brown in a 400 degree oven. Let stand 5 minutes and then serve.

New Memory Work

In January I finished off memorizing Psalms 27.  Look here to see the method to my madness. I have to admit that I am still struggling to get Psalms 27 cemented in my mind, especially the last few verses.  So I am planning on reviewing those as I learn a new set of verses.

This time around I am doing a smaller passage...a much smaller passage! I feel like I almost bit off more than I could chew with a whole chapter of Psalms.  So I thought I would give myself a break and more "instant success" by memorzing some verses that have been precious to me for a long time: Habakkuk 3:17-19.

Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
 yet I will rejoice in the LORD,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.

 The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights.

When There are no Words...

Sometimes we are left speechless...dumbfounded...wounded.  When there are no words for the pain and a lack of hope for recovery, God becomes our Word and our Hope.

The Word was with God and the Word was God. {John 1:1}

He is with us when the words aren't there.  He walks with us regardless of the situation.  Surprisingly, He becomes the words we cannot speak...

...when we are in such pain we can't describe it...when we offer forgiveness although our entire being screams, "no"...when we don't know what to say in that akward situation... He becomes the Word if we let Him.

Sometimes there is no need for words because He already has it covered...

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. {Romans 8:26}

Ultimately, it is His Word that will save us from the pain. It is His Word that will restore us and make us whole.

So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace. {Isaiah 55:11-12}

I am resting on His Word this week.

He is {Bible in 90 Days}

Candace over at His Mercy is New reminded me last week of a song that talks about who God is in each book of the Bible. Our creative worship team did motions to this song several months back, and I loved it!  I thought I would post it here and put in on my Bible in 90 days page so that I don't forget about it.  As I am reading through it is good to go back and see how God manifests Himself in each book.

Weekly Wrap-Up: What do birthdays, cabbages, Shakespeare and Don Quixote have in Common?

{Monday}
Today was Zach's 14th birthday.  My, time flies!  He is growing into such a great man!  We did very little school today because it was his birthday.  But we did study about Cervantes and Don Quixote. We also watch Man of La Mancha.  We are currently starting Don Quixote (Oxford Illustrated Classics Series) to get a quick overview of this funny piece of literature!

One highlight for Zach today was that Titan finally started rolling over. He had been trying to teach Titan to roll over on command, but it wasn't working.  Mainly because Titan isn't the type of dog that like to be on his back for any amount of time.  Today Titan just started rolling over on command for Zach.  Yay, Titan!!

{Tuesday}
Today we doubled up on school to get more done since yesterday we didn't do much.  We read about another famous Renaissance write, Shakespeare and will be reading some of his plays (in story form) later with Shakespeare Stories.

{Wednesday}
Low key day.  Got school done and even got some down time in before teaching my Spanish lessons. We read Macbeth from Shakespeare stories.  Awesome!

{Thursday}
Big science experiment day!

Cabbage, carbon dioxide, and chemical reactions!

{Friday}
Today we have on the schedule to read more Shakespeare and finish up with the rest of school.  I also am getting my haircut and have the goal of making out the boys' assignment lists for next week. We will see how much gets done.

Booking It Check-in

This year I am participating in Booking It which is hosted by Life as Mom.  Basically, I can either read books of my choosing, books from the Booking It 2011 list, or a combination of both.  For this month I decided to read some books of my choosing. There will be future months where I read from the Booking It list.

It has been a challenge in that I am currently try to read the Bible in 90 days.  But I have managed to get in some other reading. Actually, when I look back on it I am shocked at how much I have read! I actually read two books while also trying to read the Bible in 90 days!

I have already written reviews for these earlier in January when I finished them.  You can find them here and here.

I am currently working on reading  The Count of Monte Cristo (Penguin Classics) and really enjoying it!
