New Recipe Series

Last fall I did a series of posts on recipes that contained certain ingredients.  See these links...

Apples
Cranberries
Pumpkin

Well, in April I am going to start some posts for more recipes based on an ingredient. I like having recipes grouped this way because then you can eat seasonally.  You might be interested in this cookbook...

All the recipes are categorized by the four seasons and their ingredients are highlighted...so for example in the summer section you can find rhubarb recipes.  In the winter section you can find recipes with root vegetables.

While I love this cookbook, I am not going to be sharing any of the recipes from there.  I am going to be posting recipes that we have used over the years that we have enjoyed.  These are the posts that I plan to do...

Veggies
Carrots
Potatoes
Broccoli
Spinach
Mushrooms
Zucchini

Fruits
Blueberries
Mangoes
Rhubarb
Raspberries

If you have any suggestions for other fruits or veggies you would like to see recipes for, leave me a comment.

Swagbucks

Search & Win

Are you familiar with Swagbucks?  I have been hearing about them for awhile, but never signed up.  A few weeks ago I took the plunge and did.  Basically, Swagbucks is a program in which you earn points for internet searches (at least that is the main way that I am earning them).  Those points can be redeemed for things like Amazon gift cards.  You can also earn points by shopping online and referring a friend.  Personally, my whole goal is to earn some gift cards so that I can feed my obssession for books!  But Amazon has so many other things (even food!) that the gift cards could be used for. In about two weeks I have earned enough points for a $5 gift card (450 points or Swagbucks).  Not bad! Not that I am going to get rich from it, but it is nice to have a little extra to spend.

With the tough economy lately every little bit helps.  So many people are penny pinching nowadays. So this is just another way to have a little more spending money.  So if you are interested, click here to learn more.  In the interest of honesty...if you use the links I have provided in this post or click on the Swagbucks icon on my sidebar on the left and sign up I will receive Swagbucks  for you signing up.

I have basically changed the way I go to websites now.  I have the Swagbucks toolbar that has a search window.  I tend to use the toolbar to do searches and to even go to the websites I visit often.  Sometimes the searches result in getting Swagbucks and sometimes not.  When I do win some Swagbucks it is normally 10 of them.  But there have been a few times I have earned 20 for one search.

So check it out!

What went on this week...

We had a great week especially since all the snow is starting to melt!  Here in central Alaska we can have snow from October through April...and sometimes even into May.  It is great to see the sun again and to start to get a glimpse of bare ground.

We recently started a new read aloud, The Eagle of the Ninth...we will see how it goes...the first chapter was hard to get through simply because the book is set in Roman times and has a plethora of long Latin names!

On Friday, we are going over to a friend's house to make beeswax candles.  She raises bees so we have seen the whole process before (hiving, the building of the cells, producing honey, extracting it, etc.).  Now we get to work with the wax they produce.
Titan (our 11 month old mini schnauzer) got a chance to meet his baby uncle! Here is the story for how this came to be. Titan spent the night at Uncle Aurik's house on Wednesday.  We were told he was a "perfect, little angel" to his tiny relative! He did, however, have to teach Aurik "his place" a few times when Aurik became to excited in his playing.  This is interesting considering that Titan has only had exposure to older dogs...this was his first opportunity to be the "teacher" and "leader" to a pup younger than him.

Prayer Problems

As many of you know, PRAYER, is my Word of the Year.  One of my biggest quandries is why sometimes God remains silent in response to our prayers...

Sometimes our prayers go "unanswered" or rather we get a "no" or a "wait" answer from God.  Many times the reason has to do with that God's timing is different from ours...He is working out His perfect plan which may not be on our timetable.

Then there are other times...

in which God doesn't answer because there is something that we need to deal with.  Many of the below ideas come from the book, Too Busy Not to Pray.  So here are some prayer problems that we might have...

1. Your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:2  Plain, ole sin may be the culprit to why God seems not to answer.  By confessing them to Him and whoever else we have offended, we can then open up the "prayer lines".

2. If you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24  This one verse has really played out in my life.  I have had two major relationships in my life that haven't been reconciled because the other person refuses to make it right.  So I have made it my life goal to reconcile with those that hold things against me.  I go so far as to even apologize for hurts that may not have been totally my fault.  Now, you may think that is a little odd...but sometimes we hurt others even when we are doing the right thing (like moving away from a relationship that is unhealthy).  If I find out that a person is holding a grudge against me for something like that I will go to them and acknowledge the pain.

3. When you ask you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:3 Sometimes our motives for asking things in prayer are just plain selfish.  God is not always going to answer those prayers in the affirmative.  Our hearts are so deceptive that we ourselves don't see the selfishness in our requests.  There has been many a time that I have had to ask God to show me my selfish side.

4. If you close your ear to the cry of the poor, you will cry out and not be heard. Proverbs 21:13 God is not going to show us compassion if we don't show it to others! We need to be willing to reach out to others in their tough situations.

5. If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to you. But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must no expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:5-8 Sometimes it is just a plain lack of faith! We can't see around the problem...it is too big and when we turn our eyes off God, He becomes too small to deal with it.

So I ask myself, "What is blocking my prayers?" "Where does the problem lie?"

The Chronological Guide to the Bible

This is my first review for Book Sneeze. I am so excited!

I was provided a copy of The Chronological Guide to the Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishing to review. This book is a reference guide to the Bible and will work with any translation.

Here are some of the features of the book:
*Nine epochs of history that all the books of the Bible are divided into.
*A summary for each book of the Bible.
*A chronological reading guide
*Maps
*Cultural, historical, and archeological information for each time period.
*Explanations of Biblical practices
*Timelines

I thought that this book is well put together and a great reference tool! There is so much background information packed into the guide! It is a great resource for someone studying a certain book or wanting an overview of the Bible. I will be using it as a reference guide with my kids as we read different passages. The one downside to this guide is the price. It retails for $24.99 in paperback form. There a little over 200 pages so that is quite pricey for the size of the book.

You can purchase this book here.

Thomas Nelson has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.  I am not required to give a positive review.  All my opinions are my own.

Super Star Games

I was given an opportunity to review some Super Star Games as a part of the TOS Crew.  Debbie Lott from Super Star also sells a speech therapy program called Super Star Speech.  If you have a child that is struggling with speech please check out her materials. You can read some reviews on her speech therapy books here.  Since I don't have a child that needs speech therapy, I am going to review some of the games that she offers. Each game retails for $3.50.  Please click here for details. These are only some of the games that are offered.

Covering the Continents is a quiz-type game about each of the continents.  The object of the game is to "settle" more continents than your opponent by choosing the correct continent for each fact that your opponent reads to you.
Explorers of the World can be played a few different ways, either as a concentration game or as a timeline game.  Facts and dates are covered for each explorer.

Climb the Vine is a game in which you answer questions about plants and for each correct answer you "climb your vine".  The first one to the top wins.

Planets, Moon, and Stars is a "capture" game. For each right answer you get you capture a planet.  You win once you get all the planets captured.

My boys enjoyed playing these games.  They are simple to understand.  All the answers are provided right on the cards. Most of the graphics are colorful and eye-catching, although I did think that the graphics for the Climb the Vine game weren't as well done (the vine is a black outline drawing that has been hand-colored in with a crayon).  But for the price these games are worth it!  All the work is done for you...all you need to do is print them and cut out the cards.  For $3.50 you can't go wrong!  I would highly recommend getting one and trying it out!

These products have been provided to me for the purpose of reviewing them. I am not being paid to do this review. I am sharing my honest opinion of how these products work for my family.

What Am I? Reader

As a part of the TOS Crew, I was given an opportunity to review the level 2 reader in the All About Reading program that correlates with All About Spelling. A few months ago I reviewed the Beehive Reader which is being renamed Cobweb the Cat.  Both Cobweb the Cat and What Am I? will be available April 1st from the All About Spelling website. Cobweb the Cat correlates with All About Spelling level 1 and What Am I? correlates to level 2.
What am I? is a delightful reader!  I wish it had been available to my kids when they were learning to read.  There are several fascinating stories, some poems, and some "What Am I?" riddles.  I especially enjoyed the story of the musk ox and the dog that become friends and the poem about the puppy that wants a belly rub.  These readings are so endearing! The black and white illustrations are well done and interesting.

Here are the titles of the different sections of the book to give you an idea of the contents.

*The Bench (very cute story!)
*An Elf in the Alps (my least favorite)
*Broken Robot (letter to a toy store about a boy's robot)
*The Bake Sale
*Matt the Musk Ox
*Skunk Hotel (Cute!)
*Champ
*Pine Tree Pet Shop
*Just for You: Poems for Fun
*What Am I?

What Am I? will be available for $19.95 on April 1st.  To see what other TOS Crew members are saying about this book, click here.

Botany on the Wild Side...

Noah is studying botany this year with Apologia.  So when I saw these kits to grow carnivorous plants, I thought, "Why not!" There were two seed packets...one to plant now and the other has to have water added and then it is put in the fridge.  We will be able to plant the second pack in 6 weeks (on Titan's birthday)!  These plants are slow growers so we will see what happens.  Hopefully, we will end up with something!  I told the boys that this is all one big experiment, but if it works we could have Venus Flytraps, Sundews, and Pitcher plants.  We will see!

Terrestria Chronicles

As a part of the TOS Crew we received two books from the Terrestria Chronicles to review. The Terrestria Chronicles is a series of seven books about Prince Josiah who lives in Terretria. Each book is an allegory that represents the lives of Christians. The setting is medieval complete with knights, damsels in distress, and castles. The series is meant to be read in order.  Unfortunately, we received only the last two books which made it kind of hard to jump into the middle of this ongoing story.

The Golden Lamps is about the construction of a castle to protect the people from the attacks of Argamor.  During the construction of the castle some golden lamps are dug up and strange things begin to happen....
In The Great War, Prince Josiah (who by now has been a child of King Emmanuel for 11 years) continues to serve his King in the battle for Terrestria. During the story you get to see the power of the King and a glimpse of what awaits the children of the King in the Golden City.

Both my boys liked these.  My 9 year old in particular found them quite enjoyable (the books are suited for ages 10 and up). I read The Great War, and even though I am not always fond of allegories, I liked this one!  They are well written with a few cliff hangers at the end of some of the chapters. I was impressed at how much of what happens is based on scripture. There were some pretty heavy hitting concepts in there like dealing with grief and bitterness.  I felt that these were so enjoyable and teach truth from Scripture that we will try to eventually get the others in the series.

Each book retails for $7.99 or you can buy the whole set for $47.99.

If you would like to see what other TOS Crew reviewers said about this series, click here. There will be reviews for the other books in the series.

These products have been provided to me for the purpose of reviewing them. I am not being paid to do this review. I am sharing my honest opinion of how these products work for my family.

Children's Bible Hour

I received four books from Children's Bible Hour in the form of PDF's in order to review them for the TOS Crew.  These books are from the Seasons of Faith set.  Each of these softcover books come with a CD of the story and are sold for $10 each. Here is a brief summary of each book.

Seventy times Seven is a modern day version of the story in Matthew about the unmerciful servant.  In the story, Brad learns a valuable lesson about forgiveness.

Braving the Storm is the story of a little boy's family that is going through hard times.  Trees are used as an example of how we need to be rooted in Jesus to weather a storm in our lives.

You Can't Come In is a story about Zack and Adam, two friends that are building a fort. Adam shares the concept of salvation with his friend Zack.

Race with Midnight is the story of two cousins, Becky and Sarah.  Becky is hoping to get an opportunity to share the gospel with Sarah.  She does when they get lost riding horse.  Sarah trusts her horse to lead them home...giving Becky an opportunity to talk about trusting God.

Each of these books are well-written and teach spiritual truths like salvation, forgiveness, and trust in God. At the end of each book is an explanation on how to receive Jesus as your Savior. There are discussion questions available for each book here.

For a limited time (March 17-April 15) you can get free shipping when you buy the Seasons of Faith book set.  Use this code: FREESHIPAPR15.

Check out what other Crew members had to say about these books.

MckLinky Blog Hop

Veni, Vidi, Vici...

"I came, I saw, I conquered."  This week was all about Julius Caesar as he was the next part of our history studies (Biblioplan). It was good timing as the Ides (15th) of March was on Monday and we were studying Julius' murder which happened on that date.  Did I plan it this way? No!  It was a God thing...the timing just came together.  History became more real to the boys because we were studying Julius Caesar's life on the anniversary of his death.

For science this week we had several experiments to work on.  Zach is doing Apologia's General Sciene and Noah is doing Apologia's botany.  Here are a few photos...
Noah is planting some herb seeds (basil, lemon balm, and chamomile) to watch them grow and eventually to add them to soap.
Here is Zach running from his experiment!  He was sure that the balloon was going to explode as it was filling up with gas.  How come he was so sure?  Because we have a track record for doing this!  The last time we did an experiment with a balloon and a soda bottle we had an explosion and a mess! I am delighted to report that Zach's fears were unfounded! No explosions this week!

Giveaway Coming Up...

Check back tomorrow as I will be hosting a giveaway!  The Curriculum Choice is putting on a blog hop of different homeschool giveaways!

Galaxy of Education

I was given an opportunity through the TOS Crew to review some of the products from Math Galaxy.  We have reviewed a plethora of math products this year on the Crew so I was pleasantly pleased to see some products that were a little different than just an online math program.
Each product from Math Galaxy costs $24.95 and covers certain topics.  There are some products that are used on the computer after you download them and others that create printable worksheets.  First, I will focus on the software (The Math Riddler) that allows you to print worksheets and riddles for your students.

The Math Riddler has several different levels (Each level is $24.95):
*Whole Numbers (which includes topics like addition, subtraction, multiplication, time and money)
*Fractions
*Decimals and percents
*Algebra

Go to this page to see what topics are covered in each level. For each topic you have the option of printing off tons of worksheets or riddles.  The riddles are nice because the student has to work through the problems to get the answers.  All the answers are matched to a letter.  The letters are then filled into boxes that creates words and an answer to a riddle.  This adds another dimension to the worksheet.  Your child just isn't try to figure out the answers, but is also trying to solve the riddle.  The program does provide answers which I found to be invaluable.

The other products that are downloaded and used on the computer are called "Math Galaxy".  There are explanations on how to do problems, drills, and games.  Math Galaxy has the same levels plus two more (Pre-Algebra and Word Problems). To be honest my boys were not overly impressed or enthused with this software.  While the graphics are ok they weren't impressive enough to hold my boys' interest.  This may be a plus however for some kids as graphics may be distracting to some.  The one item that did catch their interest was the Bridge the Swamp game that is available in the Math Galaxy: Whole Numbers program.  In the instructional part of the program (also called "Review") a child reads the information about the certain math problems he or she is working on.  There are graphics above the instructions to illustrate what is being taught. I found this part to not being very engaging.  It is just basic information on how to perform the math problems.  In the drill section of the program students answer math problems and earn robots for right answers. The robots then can be used in the game "Labyrinth".  My boys played this game (it is like a standard videogame) and while they love videogames, they weren't overly excited about this one.

All in all, this is a decent program, but nothing that I think we would spend our money on. While I really liked the ability to print worksheets and riddles for the boys to work on I feel that paying $24.95 for each level is a bit much.  But if you are interested in trying one of the programs you have the option of buying just one and seeing what you and your kids think.  You can then buy more if it doesn work for your child.

These products have been provided to me for the purpose of reviewing them. I am not being paid to do this review. I am sharing my honest opinion of how these products work for my family.
