AVKO

I was recently asked to review the membership site for AVKO.  AVKO publishes Sequential Spelling levels 1-7.  We weren't given Sequential Spelling to review so my comments in no way reflect the actual curriculum.  I am reviewing the membership site which costs $25 to be a part of for a year. Your membership will give you a 25% discount for all the printed materials you order from the site.  That, in and of itself, would make it worth it.

So what does the membership portion of the website have to offer?
*Several e-books related to spelling and reading. A couple of the titles are The Reading Teacher's List of 5,500 Basic Spelling Words and The Teaching of Reading and Spelling.
*Audio CD's done by Don McCabe such as...
-Phonics: The Misunderstood Approach to Teaching Reading
-Create You Own Spelling Program that Really Works
-You Don't Need a Master's Degree to Teach Your Kids--Just a Degree of Caring
*Reading for Comprehension (which I will describe in more detail below).

All in all, the website was overwhelming to me. There is a lot there, but I found that most of it I wouldn't personally use. We have a spelling program that we are doing well with, and honestly we don't spend tons of time on spelling.  So I found many of the e-books to be too much information for me to use.  However, I can see that if you have a child that is struggling with either reading or spelling that these resources would be helpful.  I had other TOS Crew members tell me that these resources and Don McCabe have been very helpful in teaching their children that struggle with dyslexia.  The audios were hard to listen to in that the quality of the audio wasn't great.  Sometimes it was slightly garbled.  But Don McCabe has several audios that would be beneficial in the realm of spelling and reading. With the various materials on the site you could actually create your own spelling program if need be.

So here is my warning:  The Readings for Comprehension section of the website I found somewhat offensive....yes, offensive!  Now there was some material on there that was of value, but there was some that I can't see using with a child.  There were puns, questions and other jokes related to adultery, lingerie and suicide.  Frankly, no one can convince me to use that type of material with a child! I feel like I have to put this warning in here because I would hate for a parent to print something off the site and then hand it over to their child without realizing what is there.

That being said, if you are looking to invest in a lot of the printed materials from AVKO, the membership might be worth it for the discount. While I didn't find the website to be helpful, I know that some of the material is of value and could help many a homeschooler.

One in a Million

If you are not involved in regular personal Bible study I would highly encourage you to do so!  I started doing regular Bible study about 4 to 5 years ago and have been so blessed because of it.  Normally I do Beth Moore studies, but a friend of mine greatly encouraged me to do a study from Priscilla Shirer called One in a Million. I have done about two weeks worth of the study and these are some of the concepts that God is teaching me...
*Satan knows our weaknesses, and he targets them.

*We sometimes stick with the same sin over and over again because it has its perks. I stick with my anxiety because in a weird way it gives me a sense of control.  Am I really in control?  Not in the least!

*I need to be careful who are my closest friends.  Those that are complainers will only drag me down into complaining and negativity. God has really been teaching me over the past few years that I need to guard my heart and give it away only to those that will be honest and yet encouraging with me.

*Sometimes God takes us where we don't want to go or never envisioned going to. Recently, God has taken me into a field of service that I would have never envisioned doing. He has also been leading me into some scary situations so that I can "flex my faith muscle".

This is a short study (6 weeks) and then I will move onto the last Beth Moore Bible study that I haven't done about David (A Heart Like His).

What to do with the candy???

What to do with all the candy your kids will be getting for Halloween (or in our case we don't trick or treat but do our church's fall festival)???  Why not use some of the candy for science experiments?  Found this idea on the Homeschool Share Boards.  I love the idea!  See here.

Rainforest Animal Fun

We are doing zoology this year, and I decided to add a few fun things in the boys' workboxes this week related to rainforest animals.  Here are a few of the resources...many of them are more for Noah's age, but Zach might do a few also.

I am going to have Noah read about South America as that is the rainforest I am familiar with.  Years ago Tim and I traveled to the rainforest in Northern Argentina/Southern Brazil.  It was awesome!

Noah loves to draw so I will have him draw a few rainforest animals.
This is a cool poster in which I will have the boys try to spot each of the animals that are on the border of the poster.

Dog Breeds Lapbook

Ok, so these are not the best of pictures, but Zach just finished doing a lapbook on dog breeds that we got from Hands of a Child.  Ever since we got Titan, he has been interested in dog breeds and training so this lapbook was right up his alley!  I set up the work to get it done so that it could easily go in his workbook.  Basically, this is the first lapbook that Zach has done totally on his own!  No help from me except I did pre-cut the pieces.  To see how I set up this project for his workbox, go here.

American Heritage Education Foundation

Learning about our great country should be a vital part of our children's education. As a part of the TOS Crew I received lesson plans from the American Heritage Education Foundation on CD. The CD contains lots of ideas pertaining to our American history.  There are plans for elementary through high school.  Here is a short list of some of the topics that are covered...
*The Statue of Liberty
*The Declaration of Independence
*The Star-Spangled Banner
*George Washington
*America the Beautiful
*The Pledge of Allegiance
I took the Statue of Liberty lesson plans and did them with the boys. I found the lessons to be easy to understand and well laid out. The lessons provide a page or so of information that I read to the boys to give us some background. Then there were several activities. For my youngest, there were the words of the poem that are inscribed at the bottom of the statue that we cut apart and he had to put together.  My oldest read an article about the statue and then did a worksheet where he analyzed the meaning of the poem and defined some of the vocabulary of the poem. I loved the fact that my oldest had to really figure out what the poem was saying by defining the unfamiliar words.

To give you some idea of other activities provided in the lessons here is a short list:
*Tracing the signature of John Hancock and learning about the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
*Working with president cards to learn more about them. Putting the cards in chronological order.
*Learning about the Great Seal and the symbols on it.
*Doing crossword puzzles for the various topics.
*Learning when and how the US flag should be displayed.
*Putting the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner in order.
*Making maps of the US

All in all, I think that this is a great resource!  And do you want to hear the best news...it is completely FREE! See this page to order your free CD! With the CD you get all the lesson plans (elementary through high school). You can also order the lesson pre-printed in a binder for $19.50 per level.

Some Body

Yesterday, I picked up the game Some Body because I am planning (long range planning, that is) to do a human anatomy unit with the boys in the future. So I played the game with Noah today because he was dying to get into it.  Well, all I can say is I need some lessons in anatomy!  I couldn't remeber for the life of me what the spleen or gall bladder do!

Virginia Soaps and Scents

I was so excited to get an opportunity to review some of the products from Virginia Soaps and Scents as a part of the TOS Crew! I adore all things with yummy scents. You could call it an obsession! I received a small box filled with three soaps (Oatmeal, Milk and Honey, Fresh Orange and Coconut Lemongrass), one shampoo bar, and a laundry soap making kit!

The one item that I had never really heard of before was a shampoo bar. Yes, a shampoo bar! If you are interested to read more here is a link. With the bar, you get you hair wet and then rub the bar over your head. This is important because it creates a great lather! Rubbing the bar in my hand didn't seem to have the same effect. I LOVED what the shampoo bar did for my scalp. I have extremely itchy, dry scalp and the shampoo bar solved this problem in a few days. It was amazing! The only thing that I didn't like about the bar was that my hair had a different feeling. It was almost a squeaky clean feeling and yet oily at the same time. Now my hair looked wonderful using the bar...I just wasn't overly fond of the feeling of my hair. One of the members of the TOS Crew who uses shampoo bars on a regular basis suggested doing a vinegar rinse (1 cup water with 2 T. apple cider vinegar) on my hair. It was perfect! My hair had that normal feeling again, and I didn't even need to use conditioner. That is saying a lot if you knew how dry my hair is! This could say me tons of cash! If you have never tried a shampoo bar, I would give it a try. For me, it is so worth it, if I can save on conditioner and heal my dry, itching scalp.

I immediately made the laundry soap. I do make homemade powdered laundry soap and use it. So I was very familiar with how well it cleans. My kit came with instructions to make the liquid version so I went ahead and whipped it up! It was fairly easy and not a lot of mess! The soap did gel up quite a bit...more than what I expected, but it is working wonderfully in cleaning our clothes!

I have to say that we may be switching to using Virginia Soaps and Scents exclusively when it comes to soap! These soaps are amazing! My older son has eczema and has a real hard time in the winter with regular hand soap. We have tried some other products that worked, but were real expensive. He can use this soap (which is very moisturizing without all the chemicals) and not have a reaction at all. I have very dry hands and actually hate washing my hands a lot during the winter because my skin will start to peel and crack. With this soap, I can actually wash my hands and not worry about applying lotion each time. I believe the soaps they make contain coconut oil. I had heard that coconut oil is good for acne. Well, as I have gotten older I have struggled with acne. I know it makes no sense...someone my age with dry skin and acne! Well, I have been using the soaps on my face and the occurence of acne has gone way down! Of the scents that we tried none of them in my opinion were overpowering. However, if you have someone in your family that is sensitive to scents they do carry unscented soaps.

Virginia Soaps and Scents currently has their holiday soaps available. I just ordered some of the pumpkin spice (I love all things pumpkin as some of you may know!) and the peppermint! They smell awesome! Great for Christmas gifts!

I have been so impressed with these products that I am going to do a giveaway of a few of the trial size bars of soap! Richelle at Virginia Soaps and Scents has graciously offered me two bars of soap to give away! Check out my blog tomorrow for the giveaway!

To see prices of their products visit these links. They have it set up that the more you buy the more you save on each bar of soap.

Cards Made to Order...

I have been selling my cards for over a year now.  For the first year I had them at a local shop.  The shop eventually closed down, and my dear friend offered to sell them at her workplace because many of the women were interested in handmade cards. Well, this past week I got my first "order" for a set of cards...20 of them for a going away party. They are made with old olive and rich razzleberry two colors from Stampin' Up! Here are the outsides and insides of the cards...

I am hoping to do more card orders in the future! It is a great way to make a little money and do the hobby I so enjoy!

More to be Thankful for...

holy experience

Here is my continuing list of things to be thankful for...

26. A computer to be able to do my work, email, and blog.

27. Good health of the whole family...we have been run down a bit with colds, but we are staying relatively healthy.

28. Curriculum...yes, curriculum...makes my homeschooling so much easier!

29. The ability to teach the Jr. High Sunday School Class at church.  They are an amazing group of kids!  I am so enjoying them!

30. Being on the TOS Crew this year. We have been blessed with so many wonderful products to try out. I have loved this opportunity.

31. Safety on the roads.

32. Art classes with another homeschooling family.  This time spent doing art (something I never would have done with the kids on my own) has been a major blessing for us.

33. Our comfy sofa where we can sit and watch a movie.

34. The ability and ambition to do in depth Bible study.  I am looking forward to two new Bible studies, One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer and A Heart Like His by Beth Moore.  Can't decide which to do first, but they should be arriving in the mail any day now!

35. Exercise!  Keeps me healthy and sane!

36. The upcoming holidays

37. Hot baths with bubbles, of course!

38. Food stored up for the winter...less trips to the grocery store (in theory)!

39. Friends for my boys...I love to see them make connections with great kids!

40. My monthly cooking adventures with a friend.  This has been a lifesaver for me... having all that food in my freezer.
