Workbox Ideas

Last week I made a long list of ideas to use in our workboxes. A lot of these activities are based on my boys likes and interests. These would be activities outside of our normal curriculum. This is what I came up with....

*Small bag of Legos with instructions to build something (build a food, a vehicle, a building, etc.)

*TOS Crew materials (that we will need to review this year)

*We will use the above book that we picked up while in Canada. Some of the activities will be...

-Build provincial flags out of legos

-Color the provincial flags

-Read the history of the province. Narrate it to mom.

-Write down how each province got its name.

-Label provincial maps.

*Draw historical scenes.

*Color scenes from the Story of the World activity book.

*Kid cryptograms

*Calculator games

*Learn the Babylonian number system

*Study Times Tales

*Put envelopes of skip count numbers in order (Right Start game box)

*Study "Yo, Millard Fillmore!" book to learn the presidents

*Read a Greek myth and then tell it back to mom

*Whittle something

*Magic number squares

*Cook a recipe

*Create a chess board out of legos

*Study chess strategies

*Make 3D snowflakes

*Label a picture with Spanish words

*Pick a Bible story and draw its events

*Animal Classification (here and here)

*Listen to Skip Count Kid CD

*Make a list of extinct animals

*Do Word Roots computer game

*Find a country for every letter of the alphabet

*Look at a map of the US. Categorize the state according to what letter they start with.

*Alphabetize the states.

*Put the books of the Bible in order from a list of the books which are out of order.

*A-Z exotic animals

Web Design for Kids

As a part of the TOS (The Old Schoolhouse) Crew we received Web Design for Kids to review. Even though I have a blog I am rather weak in computer skills. Anything I have ever learned to do on a computer has been through trial and error or shall I say, "errors"...lots of them! So I was a little fearful to delve into web design with my kids. Web Design for Kids is a DVD that normally retails for $40, but it is on sale now for $19.99!

We popped in the DVD and I was amazed! The teaching is straightfoward and we were able to create a very simple web page in one lesson! My oldest son (who loves technology) is totally loving the ability to change background colors, arrange text on the page, add pictures and create scrolling text. This DVD teaches HTML in a clear, concise manner that makes it easy for everyone! Here is a list of the lessons that are included on the DVD...

1. 10 Basic Lines of Code

2. Sandwiches and Colors

3. Make a Subject Stand Out

4. Stand Alone Tags

5. Designing Backgrounds

6. Fonts and Paragrahps

7. Pictures

Because you need to follow step by step instructions we found it helpful to have the computer and DVD player in the same spot so that the kids could go back and forth between listening to the instructions and working with HTML on the computer. Your computer only needs Internet Explorer and Notepad which is already on most of them. We really liked Brian Richardson's teaching style and how he even shows the kids what happens when you mess up and don't type the code properly.

We would highly recommend this DVD if you or your kids are interested in learning HTML! My boys are having a lot of fun with their webpages!

Visit the Click Drag Solutions website for more information about the DVD and to see a video clip of it. You can also see examples of websites that kids have created! To see more reviews on Web Design for Kids go to the TOS Crew website.

Update on Titan

When we got back from our trip we were amazed at how much Titan has grown (we didn't take him with us instead the family that owns his mom took him in for two weeks). He is doing well with "potty training" and has stopped biting so much (he was really teething something fierce before we left). He still loves to get into stuff as you can see here...he knows that his treats are in this box, and he is hoping to help himself to them!

Our Trip to the Yukon

We recently got back from a 2,000 road trip in the Yukon. We basically visited all the places that were important to the Klondike gold rush which happened in the late 1890's. Miners would land in Dyea (near Skagway, AK) and then hike the Chilkoot trail with all their supplies for a year. They would then wait for breakup (basically spring and the breaking up of the ice on the rivers) to float down the Yukon river to Dawson City. We made our trip in reverse order going to Dawson first and then eventually to Dyea. It was an awesome trip filled with lots of history! Here are a few pictures of the journey....

On the ferry to Dawson City. Dawson is on the Yukon River and there is no bridge to it. You must ride a ferry to get there.

Do you know what an inukshuk is?The last remains of the town of Dyea, the starting point for the Chilkoot trail. The start of the Chilkoot Trail...read about the history of the trail here.

GrapeVine Studies-TOS Crew Review

What is Grapevine studies? It is a curriculum that uses easy-to-follow lessons and drawing stick figures to learn the stories of the Bible. It can be used with kids as young as five all the way to adults. As a part of the TOS crew this year I received two of Grapevine's studies to look over and review: Esther and Biblical Feasts and Holy Days. We just completed Esther this past week.

Grapevine is set up so that you read a section of the Bible and then draw stick figures for each section or scene. There are review questions after each lesson. Each lesson consists of eight sets of pictures that need to be drawn for the passage (or passages) that were read. That's all there is to it! But don't think just because it is an easy set-up that these studies aren't worth it. My boys gleaned so much from "stickfiguring" the book of Esther! First of all they learned the details of the story and then we were able to apply the lessons of the story to our lives. I loved the fact that the last review question for each lesson asked, "What do we learn about God from these verses?" I was amazed to find out that my boys really were able to make connections about what was going on in the story and how God was at work.

Here is a page from our study....normally I had one of my sons do the top two pictures and the other do the bottom pictures.
I was amazed at how much my boys loved this curriculum! I was concerned when I received it because my oldest who is 12 hates to pick up a pencil! But my fears were soon relieved...he actually begged to do these lessons! He never does that! He really got into drawing the actions for each section of the story. So if you are worried that your child might not like it because they don't like to draw I would give one of the studies a try anyways. They may turn out to love it! We can't wait to work through the Biblical Feasts and Holy Days study soon!

Check out the GrapeVine Studies website for prices on their studies. Most of the studies come in e-book or regular book format. I really felt that for these studies you need both the teacher and student books. The teacher's book was invaluable because it shows you what to stick figure for each picture. Prices vary depending on what study you get, but our Esther e-books were $10.95 for the teacher's book and the same for the student book.

The Gospel of John

We recently finished watching The Gospel of John which is a 3 hour movie depicting the life of Jesus. What I loved about this film was the fact that you could take out a Bible, find the gospel of John and read along as the movie was playing! The only words in the movie are the words from the gospel in the Good New Bible version. We did break it up and watch it in parts. Zach was even able to watch all of it and get a lot out of it. I know that I understood more by watching it happen in front of my eyes. The acting was well done...I loved the way Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well was portrayed...it almost came across like they were joking with each other. Definitely not what I had envisioned, but I could see it happening that way!
