Math Tutor
I received two DVD's from Math Tutor as a part of the TOS Crew to review. The first DVD is called Young Minds: Numbers and Counting. This DVD is for much younger kids than mine so I spent a few minutes looking it over. It is for preschoolers that are learning how to count from 1 to 10. Kids learn the numbers by counting items from photographs. There is classical music in the background as the numbers are being taught. There is also a section of bonus materials with puzzles, connect the dots, and a "Guess the Animal" game. The DVD is well done and professionally put together. This is definitely for preschoolers and might be a good thing to pull out if you need some time to work with your older kids. The DVD sells for $19.99 which I think is rather high considering that all it does is teach a kid the numbers from 1-10.
The second DVD we received was entitled "Basic Math Word Problem Tutor". I liked this DVD much better and can see how it would be helpful. It is 8 hours of instruction on how to do word problems. It is divided into 15 lessons:
Disc 1
Section 1: Adding Whole Numbers
Section 2: Subtracting Whole Numbers
Section 3: Multiplying Whole Numbers
Section 4: Dividing Whole Numbers
Section 5: Adding Decimals
Section 6: Subtracting Decimals
Section 7: Multiplying Decimals
Section 8: Dividing Decimals
Disc 2
Section 9: Adding Fractions
Section 10: Subtracting Fractions
Section 11: Multiplying Fractions
Section 12: Dividing Fractions
Section 13: Percents, Part 1
Section 14: Percents, Part 2
Section 15: Ratio and Proportion
The lessons teach strategies on how to do word problems. They go over vocabulary that is used in word problems so that kids know how to set up the equation. Kids are encouraged to draw pictures in the process of solving the problem. Time is spent going over several examples so that kids can get the hang of it. The DVD retails for $26.99 which is a great deal considering there are 8 hours of instruction.
Math Tutor has several DVD programs for different areas of math like algebra, calculus, geometry and even physics. See their website for a complete list of available DVD's.
